Buzz Rickson’s Dropped a Wool-Free N-1 Jacket

The N-1 is arguably the most iconic piece of Naval outerwear. Introduced in the early 1940s and widely appreciated for its insulating properties, the N-1 (or ‘Deck Jacket‘) is typically produced from a tightly woven whipcord (known as jungle cloth), lined with alpaca wool, and finished with an alpaca collar for ultimate warming goodness.

Buzz Rickson’s has been reproducing N-1s for decades, now, but this year, they’ve produced a modified version they’re dubbing the Civilian Model. Made from the same 100% cotton Jungle Cloth as most N-1s, this Deck Jacket splits from the pack through the omission of any alpaca wool. Instead, Buzz fitted a cotton lining and a corduroy collar, the latter of which will develop a handsome patina as the years go by.

All of the non-woolen N-1 hallmarks are still here, from the zip and button closure, drawstrings at the waist if you wish to size up, and throat latch button closure. Military repro features are also out in force through the inclusion of mil-spec urea buttons, a Talon zipper, and an Aviation Associates woven neck label.
