Tanuki Gives Us The Blues With Its Yurai Denim

Another brand coming out of Okayama, Japan, is Tanuki. The new rising star in the denim game, the brand is built on experience, knowledge, and vision. Formed by a group of dedicated denim crafters who pride themselves on their understanding and interpretation of the fabric, the brains behind the brand are able to manipulate shuttle looms to weave unique fabric which is arguably taking Japanese denim into a new era.

Tanuki’s latest offering is its ‘Yurai’ fabric. Taking the process of rope-dyeing a step further, the brand created a cobalt blue weft with natural indigo. Creating a rich and vivid blue, the process of dipping the yarn into natural indigo with shorter exposures to oxygen, means this bolt of lightning blue denim really catches your eye. The fabric is then woven using a low-tension weave which will provide the abrasion needed to bring the cobalt blue to the surface as the denim fades.

Weighing in at 16.5 oz.—but feeling lighter and more breathable due to the open, loose weave—the Yurai denim is offered in a Type II Jacket and a High Tapered jean.  From copper rivets and a custom veg-tanned deerskin leather patch to a modern-day tapered silhouette and the addition of hand-warmer pockets (yes, we know how some of you feel about this!) to the Type II, Tanuki is ushering in a new era of Japanese denim.
